Key Points

  • New EV charging stations launched for drivers in Singapore and Malaysia.
  • The grid covers several areas including Johor, Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
  • An app is now available for drivers to detect the nearest charging ports.

The local gas provider of Singapore along with a tech-based Malaysian company, recently launched a cross-border electric vehicle charging grid. The attempt enhances the connectivity of electric vehicle drivers in Singapore and Malaysia.

The joint venture also allows drivers to access the charging service through an app. This app makes it possible for the drivers to remotely locate the nearest charging locations. Also, the app allows the operation of the charging points. The charging grid covers multiple areas including Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the local gas provider of Singapore, electric vehicle charging points are available for use now. Charging points are found along the Johor-Penang highway. They can also be found in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. However, what is convenient here is how the same app can be used in both Singapore and Malaysia to operate the EV charging points.

The venture also promises to add about 50 more DC chargers to the network. This will greatly benefit EV drivers. Traveling too far prior to installation of the charging network always caused tension. The drivers usually found themselves without stations to charge their vehicles.

Now EV drivers simply have to use the app to locate nearby charging ports.  Furthermore, it is possible to scan the QR code at the charging station to enter an ID. This allows the driver to manually select between AC and DC charging. The separate prices are also provided in the app.
